This living room design embodies a harmonious fusion of Japanese minimalism and modern sophistication, tailored for a retired scientist seeking tranquility and intellectual depth. The space utilizes a balanced composition of natural materials, clean lines, and a restrained color palette to create a serene yet thought-provoking atmosphere.
Design Techniques & Approach:
Architectural Framework: The structured wooden beams across the ceiling and along the walls pay homage to traditional Japanese craftsmanship, adding warmth and a sense of order—an element that resonates with the scientist's meticulous nature.
Material & Texture Play: The juxtaposition of smooth wood, textured fabric panels, and delicate Shoji-style screens creates a multi-sensory experience, inviting touch and contemplation.
Monochromatic Contrast: Black and bronze accents add an air of sophistication while grounding the design. The dark seating, cabinetry, and trims create visual depth, while metallic highlights in the lighting and decor introduce a subtle opulence.
Lighting & Ambiance: A layered lighting scheme, combining soft ambient lighting with task and accent fixtures, ensures the space feels inviting and intimate, perfect for reading, reflection, or quiet conversation.

Client's Problem:
A client excitedly purchased a new sofa, only to realized it was too bulky for her living room, making the space feel cramped and unbalanced. She reached out for advice on how to make the room more functional, aesthetically pleasing, and modern—without getting rid of the oversized sofa.
My Solution:
To create a sense of openness, I focused on strategic layout adjustments and design tricks that maximize space perception:
Optimized Layout – I repositioned the sofa to enhance flow and prevent it from dominating the room. Placing it against a wall or slightly angled created a more inviting and spacious feel.
Light & Color Play – We used a neutral color palette for walls and decor to create an illusion of space, complemented by mirrors to reflect light and add depth.
Smart Storage Solutions – Multi-functional furniture, such as nesting tables and hidden storage ottomans, kept clutter at bay without overwhelming the space.
Vertical Design Elements – Tall bookshelves, wall-mounted lighting, and art helped draw the eye upward, making the room feel taller and less sofa-centric.

A Sophisticated Soho Flat
As part of an assignment with the British Academy of Interior Design, we were tasked with designing a newly built flat in a busy city. The brief required a minimalist interior with a red, grey, and white color palette, tailored for a photographer in his late 20s.
Design Concept & Approach:
Understanding the client’s profession and lifestyle, I aimed to create a space that was not only visually striking but also highly functional—allowing creativity to flow while maintaining a sense of calm amid the city’s hustle.
Utilizing the High Ceiling – The flat featured a high ceiling, which provided an opportunity to maximize space. To enhance functionality, I incorporated a mezzanine level, creating a dedicated area for both the bedroom and a photography studio. This separation allowed for a more spacious and open main living area.
- Color Palette & Balance – The red, grey/black, and white scheme was used strategically to evoke energy and sophistication. Crisp white walls kept the space bright and clean, while various shades of grey added depth. Bold red accents, such as furniture upholstery or feature walls, provided contrast and visual interest.
Minimalist Aesthetic – Clean lines, uncluttered surfaces, and a pared-down approach ensured a sleek and contemporary feel, essential for a photographer’s artistic mindset.
Functional Layout – The design prioritized an open-plan living area, maximizing space and natural light—ideal for inspiration and relaxation.
Multi-Purpose Elements – A fold-away workspace and hidden storage solutions were integrated, offering flexibility without compromising style.

The Outcome:
The result was a modern, urban sanctuary that reflected the dynamic lifestyle of a young photographer—bold yet balanced, minimalist yet expressive, and above all, a functional space that encouraged both creativity and comfort. The mezzanine addition optimized the vertical space, ensuring that both living and work areas coexisted seamlessly in a stylish and efficient manner.

A Luxurious Kitchen-Dining Workshop
In the kitchen-dining design workshop at the British Academy of Interior Design, I incorporated beige marble flooring, which complemented the black marble countertops and backsplash while adding a soft, neutral base to the space. To create contrast and vibrancy, I introduced bright accent colors throughout the room, such as vibrant cushions on the dining chairs and colorful artwork on the walls. These pops of color brought energy to the modern and luxurious atmosphere, balancing the darker tones of the marble with playful yet elegant hues, creating a dynamic and inviting space.
A Non-Traditional Gender-Neutral Baby Nursery
I created this non-traditional, gender-neutral baby nursery in nude earth tones for a young couple who is very close to me. The design reflects their style and values, focusing on calming shades of taupe, beige, and soft browns, with natural wood elements to create a warm, inviting space. I wanted the nursery to feel organic and peaceful, a serene retreat for both the baby and the parents, while staying true to their modern yet minimalist tastes. The design was crafted with love and attention to detail, ensuring it was a space that would grow with their little one.
